You get the government you pay for

Great_Seal_of_United_StatesTo paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of social security’s insolvency are greatly exaggerated. Future payouts are eminently fixable with a mix of cuts and revenue increases. Problems can be attributed to a lack of investment in good governance. Despite steep budget cuts, Social Security Administration Commissioner Astrue made significant headway in reducing the number of pending disability claims for the last three years. Only recently has the backlog increased, concurrent with overloaded caseworkers, hiring freezes, and reduced office hours  to the overseeing agency. Social security is underfunded, but most egregiously not in the way most people are led to believe. The agency itself has been underfunded and overburdened for years.
